How to Apply

Applications to The Sazerac Legacy Grant are based on trainer/mentor nomination. Riders may request their trainer/mentor nominate them, or trainers/mentors may nominate riders they believe fit the criteria. Nominations must include a paragraph describing why this candidate should be considered for this grant and what finals they would use the grant towards. A picture must accompany this nomination.

The recipient will be announced at the Northwest Spectacular Horse Show.

Nomination traits: tenacity, horsemanship, sportsmanship, brilliance in their efforts to reach their goals, and a focus on the connection to the horses.

Nominations must be emailed to president@oregonhunterjumper.org by 11:59 pm on August 12, 2025.

The Sazerac Legacy Grant will be awarded to the recipient at the NW Spectacular horse show in Wilsonville, OR. Attendance at the NW Spectacular is not mandatory to receive the grant, but we ask that nominees have a representative there to collect the trophy and grant.

Q: Who can be nominated for The Sazerac Legacy Grant?

A: The Sazerac Legacy Grant is open to any junior (17&U) riders

Q: Is the grant only for juniors who plan to show back east?

A: No. The Sazerac Legacy Grant is open to juniors aiming for finals on either coast

Q: Could this grant be used to go to the Zone Team Jumper Championships, WCHR Championships, or NorCal Pony Medal?

A: Yes. A junior rider may use this grant to go to any final. Hunter, jumper, equitation, and pony riders are all welcome to apply.

Q: Will this grant continue after 2025?

A: Yes. This grant will continue to be offered and grow in the future.

Q: What does the recipient get for being awarded the grant?

A: In addition to the $2,000 grant to be used for any fall final of choice, the recipient will get to hold The Sazerac Legacy Grant perpetual trophy for a year.

Q: Do I need an OHJA membership to be nominated?

A: Yes. This grant is for OHJA members only.

Q: Why was a grant created in memory of Sazerac?

A: Sazerac was a beloved horse in Oregon when he was alive and represented Oregon at many finals over the years. After he passed, his people wanted to remember him. We encourage anyone with questions to read Ella’s personal statement on the About the Grant page.
